О курсе
Welcome to the page of the Lake Baikal Foundation for Environmental Applications and Research!
In the first video-lesson of the course we, jointly with Dmitry Glazov and Maria Solovyeva – experts of A.N. Severtsov Institute for Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will tell you about a unique animal – the Baikal seal. The Baikal seal is the only mammal of Lake Baikal which is on the top of its food chain.
To preserve this amazing animal it is necessary to study its current state, migration routes, way of life and behavioural patterns.
Thanks to the lesson you will learn how the scientists carried out the first large-scale expedition on satellite tagging of the Baikal seal in summer 2019. You will have an opportunity to listen to the scientists who participated in the expedition and fixed satellite tags on the seals. In the video-lesson you will find the detailed portrait of the Baikal seal in the wild, as well as exciting tasks. Most significantly, you will learn how each of us – both children and adults – can make an important contribution to the conservation of the Baikal seal – this endemic animal that lives only in the Baikal and nowhere else in the world.
The video lesson is a part of the Lake Baikal Foundation program “The Baikal Seal Year” which was supported by The Presidential Grants Foundation.
After conducting the lesson, we kindly ask teachers to fill in a contact form, attach 3 photos capturing different moments of the lesson.
We wish you a pleasant and educational lesson!
