FIRST Tech Challenge for Beginners

This course is an introduction for students and mentors who want to learn about FIRST Tech Challenge and start their own team.

The course will teach you how FIRST Tech Challenge works, introduce you to basic CAD modeling and robot design in Onshape, and guide you through the basics of programming in Java.

Чему вы научитесь

  • What FIRST Tech Challenge is and how its competitions and seasons work
  • How to create basic 3D CAD models using Onshape
  • How to design a FIRST Tech Challenge robot in Onshape
  • How to write and structure Java code using the FIRST Tech Challenge SDK
  • How to program a robot's drivetrain and basic mechanisms, using TeleOp and simple Autonomous code

О курсе

This course is designed for students joining the FIRST Tech Challenge program for the first time. FIRST Tech Challenge is an international robotics competition where teams of students design, build, and program a robot to compete in a game that changes every season, while also learning engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

The goal of this course is to take a rookie team from zero experience to being able to design and program a basic competition-ready robot. Unlike general robotics or programming courses, everything here is taught in the direct context of FIRST Tech Challenge: the tools, workflow, and examples you'll see are the same ones real teams use every season.

The course is organized into five modules:

  • Introduction to FIRST Tech Challenge — the competition structure, seasons, events, judging, rules, and what it means to be part of a team
  • Introduction to CAD with Onshape — the basics of the Onshape CAD platform used by most FIRST Tech Challenge teams
  • Basic FIRST Tech Challenge Robot in Onshape — designing a simple robot chassis and mechanisms
  • Java Programming in FIRST Tech Challenge — core Java concepts as used in the FIRST Tech Challenge SDK
  • Basic FIRST Tech Challenge Programs — writing your first Autonomous and TeleOp programs and running them on real hardware

By the end, you'll understand how a FIRST Tech Challenge season works, be able to design a basic robot in CAD and to write and run your own robot code  — everything a rookie team needs to get started with confidence.

Для кого этот курс

This course is for both students and adults, with no prior experience in robotics, CAD, or programming required. It's especially useful for: Students joining a FIRST Tech Challenge team for the first time, including new members of a rookie team who need a fast, structured onboarding, or students simply curious about what FIRST Tech Challenge actually involves; Adults — teachers, university students, parents, or anyone else — who would like to become a mentor or coach and need a clear, practical starting point Mentors and coaches who want a ready-made onboarding course for new recruits each season

Начальные требования

No prior experience with robotics, CAD software, or programming is required. Basic computer literacy (installing software, using a web browser) is enough to get started.

Как проходит обучение

The course is split into 5 modules.

Module 1 is for everyone. It covers the basics of what FIRST Tech Challenge is, using text and video content. Every lesson ends with a few practice questions to help you check your understanding.

Modules 2 and 3 cover CAD using Onshape, for anyone who wants to learn how to create a 3D model of a robot and its custom parts. These lessons are made up of video explanations, supported by text.

Modules 4 and 5 cover FIRST Tech Challenge programming in Java. These lessons are made up of text explanations, supported by video.

Что вы получаете

  • A clear, confident understanding of how FIRST Tech Challenge works, so you can join your team without feeling lost;
  • Real, hands-on experience with the same tools FIRST Tech Challenge teams use every season — Onshape for CAD and Android Studio for programming;
  • A basic robot chassis you designed yourself in CAD, and real Java code you wrote and ran on actual hardware;
  • The confidence to contribute to your team from day one, whether that's in CAD, programming, or understanding the competition itself;
  • A strong foundation to keep building on throughout your first season, and in seasons to come
